NORA Prachunrong

NORA Prachunrong is an art piece that reinterprets and rearranges the elements of Nora folk art by using lights and shadows to create an animating sculpture. The form has been mimicking ‘Pa-ob’ or Thai casket, which is a small Thai-traditional ornamental box for keeping important things. Similar to Pa-ob, this art piece keeps the story and spirit of Nora. NORA Prachunrong would like to show that Thai cultural heritage has many more dimensions and perspectives to look at.

Lights and shadows have been used as a core tool for storytelling. Flashing lights are also used to create an illusion of moving patterns - or generally known as “animation”. All of these bring the art piece to life, and lead the audiences to a brand new experience of Nora that they have never met before.

FORM
Picture
The form of NORA Prachunrong is created mimicking a Pa-ob or Thai-traditional casket shape. Pa-ob is usually used to keep important things – such as relics or souvenirs. Therefore, this art piece keeps the story and spirit of Nora.

Nora costumes and Nora dances have been used to create NORA Prachunrong. The upper part of the art piece is Nora Headdress (Serd). The lower part is a custom-made glass engraved with the patterns of Nora costumes and Nora dances.

ANIMATION
Lights and shadows technique has been used to tell the story of NORA Prachunrong. Flashing lights create an illusion of moving patterns - turning them to animations.
This technique had been applied for broadcasting of a motion-picture film in the past. These movements of animations bring this art piece to life.

Picture
The patterns are created based on the original Nora dances from books and videos. The animations were designed and created on the computer. Then deliberately engraved the patterns on the glass.

Then deliberately engraved the patterns on the glass. The designated frame rate of the animation is 20 frames per second.

The animated patterns were designed in the same way as a motion-picture film. After that we engraved these patterns on the glass.

3D-printed model and animation of the Headdress (Serd) were created using a 3D Creation software.
The animation of this upper part also runs at 20 frames per second.

Then 3D printed the model, and painted with long-rak-pid-thong or gold lacquer painting technique.

Project mechanism
In order to make lights, shadows, and animation, the art piece is designed to be able to control the rotation of stepper motor, and also be able to turn on/off the two positions of LED lights.
The lights are designated to flash 20 times per second relating to the number of spaces between each column of animating patterns. The lights that flash up the patterns on a rotating glass are the same technique we used for motion-picture film projector.
