‘Fabric’ is the product of weaving natural or synthetic materials together until they become one material using, for example, cotton, silk or nylon. The usages of fabrics are in clothing, home products, and the materials used in making fabrics are materials from animals, plants, natural minerals, and chemicals.
Other than the difference in materials and technologies used in creating the fabrics, the patterns on fabrics are also different. The patterns represent cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Therefore, the patterns in each woven fabric have their own stories which are hidden in under each thread that is designed and crafted into a fabric.
This set of work is inspired by traditional Thai fabric patterns. The patterns vary in sizes i.e. small, medium, large, and in colors, but are woven into one single piece of fabric. These creative patterns have interesting and intriguing details. The patterns have repetitive characteristics which are comparable to the process of creating an ‘Animation’. An ‘Animation’ is developed using the ‘Persistence of Vision Technique’ which uses multiple still images and flashes them through our eyes continually in a short period of time, allowing us to see them as moving pictures.
The artwork uses the same category of Thai textile patterns with symmetric shapes. The patterns are embroidered together and sewed into a single piece of fabric. The fabric presents an interwoven pattern comprising various sized patterns and spacings between them. Some parts of the design are newly created but are based on traditional Thai textile patterns.
The completed fabric is placed onto the belt system where the two ends of the fabric are sewed together into a loop. The next step is the mimicking of the creation of animation, which was later developed into film screening, where the fabric is used instead of a movie film. The technique involves us turning the fabric on the belt in a loop where the speed of turning is controlled, then a strobe light which creates Persistence of Vision is activated. This results in the patterns animating and coming to life.
The artwork controls the rate of the strobe light, therefore, the speed and direction of the animation are dependent on the various patterns and sizes, and the rate of the strobe light.

The motion picture created using textile patterns can be seen as a storytelling medium. Even though the textile patterns have been designed and created for centuries, they still hold untold stories to be explored today. These stories have lived through time, development of cultures and knowledge in textiles which hold them together on a piece of fabric.
Watching the motion picture is much like watching a movie filmed using embroideries and weavings, with stories told through the patterns and their rhythms. This artwork, therefore, is much like a movie seeking to reveal its stories through revived patterns.
