Life/Time
I am interested in the relationship between light and our visual perception. I researched and studied the subject, and found an animation technique which creates an illusion for our eyes. If the human eye sees a sequence of still images in a short time period and those images present a slight change or transition, for instance, a galloping horse, our minds will piece together those images and perceive them as a moving image. This technique is referred to as ‘The Persistence Of Vision’, a technique used in cinematography today.
A movie is a record of moving images and stories on a film strip. On the other hand, I wonder if it is possible to record the stories we experience on a material that is related to the stories’ contexts or a material that is present in those stories in order to preserve the emotions, the feelings and the meanings of those moments.
I began building this work based on the aforementioned hypothesis and imprinted stories on various materials. Each work lead me to something new. I met new people, explored new places. For my previous work where I made an animation from traditional Thai fabric (Textile Story), I developed a fascination towards traditional Thai art and the cultures in my own country. There are still many stories to be explored and told.

In this set of work, I was inspired by the stories reflected through a drinking glass’s surface and wanted to imprint those stories back on to the surface itself. From observation, each glass reflects the stories, the way of life, the contexts of the person who uses it. Sometimes a glass is used as a mean to reconnect and communicate with the death, other times it is used for worshipping for wealth and success in life. It is interesting that these stories are still deeply buried in Thai culture even to this modern day
The new moments which are created on the glasses’ surface are from the observation of how the glasses are used, and the glasses’ reflections whether they are something physical and perceivable by the eye or symbols which reflect those moments
The glasses in this work are therefore a reflection of society and culture, and act as an record of this modern day. Every time a light casts on the glass, a story is told. Each glass tells a different story according to their various shapes and contexts in which they are used.

Life/Time is an Interactive Installation which creates a moving image based on the persistence of vision technique on drinking glasses. It is designed for participators to interact with the glasses by dipping their fingers into water and touch the rim of the glasses. The glasses will start moving and creating sounds if pressed and held. As the light shines through the moving glasses, the still images on the glasses will start to appear as one moving image and come to life. Each glass is different in size, shape and sound. The participant can choose to change the glasses and explore the various stories in each one.

Project mechanism
The glass receives a pressure from the pressed finger and presses the sensor at the bottom of the glass. The Arduino processes the information and controls the movement of the motor. If the pressure is held and the vibration is constant, a sound will play and the motor will turn. The light which shines through the glass flashes twenty times per second, a rate which correlates with the number of the light gap on the patterns on the moving glass. It is a technique used in film on film strips but used on glasses instead.
